Berwick Homes for Sale
BERWICK is a town in York County, Maine and located beside the Salmon Falls River. Originally the town was part of Kittery and was first settled about 1631 and called Kittery Commons or Kittery North Parish. In 1675 the settlement was attacked by Indians and the village was destroyed by fire and abandoned. It was resettled in 1703 and called Newichawannock which is an old Abenaki name.

In 1713 it was incorporated by the Massachusetts General Court as Berwick, the ninth oldest town in Maine. Berwick had the first schoolhouse built there in 1719. Berwick was once quite large and included South Berwick that became its own town in 1814 and North Berwick that because its own town in 1831. Lumbering was the major industry, but in the 19th century Berwick partnered up with Somersworth, New Hampshire a mill town to assist in milling the lumber.
