KITTERY is a town in York County, Maine and the town declares itself to be the “Gateway to Maine”. Kittery was settled in 1623 and incorporated in 1647. It was named after the birthplace of the founder Alexander Shapleigh from Kittery Court at Kingsweare in Devon, England. Fisheries were established offshore at the Isles of Shoals and the fish they caught were salted and exported back to Europe. Other early pioneers were hunters, trappers and workers of the timber industry.

The settlement was located at the mouth of the Piscataqua River and was protected by Fort McClary. During the Revolution the first vessels of the US Navy were constructed on Badger Islands which included the 1777 USS Ranger commanded by John Paul Jones. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was the first in the nation Federal Navy Yard which was established in the 1800’s. Today the Shipyard still overhauls, repairs and does modernization of submarines. Kittery is also known for its many outlet stores along Route 1.
