York Maine Homes for Sale
YORK is a town in York County, Maine and is well known as a summer resort. York is located beside the Atlantic Ocean on the Gulf of Maine. The town includes the villages of York Village, York Harbor York Beach and Cape Neddick. The area was first called Agamenticus meaning beyond the hill little cove. It was the Abenaki name for the York River. It was settled in 1638 and the name was changed to Bristol after Bristol England by Sir Ferdinando Gorges.

In 1642 by charter of King Charles I, it became the first incorporated city in America. Following the death of Gorges; the Massachusetts Bay Company claimed the area and then became York, Massachusetts in 1652 making it the second oldest town in Maine. York’s numerous wharves and warehouses traded with the West Indies agricultural products and lumber in exchange for sugar, molasses and other commodities.
York is still a summer resort that attracts thousand of visitors each year. The shore lines of Short Sands Beach and Long Sands Beach still has many of the homes with architecture from the Gilded Age era. Some of the picturesque views are of the Cape Neddick Light at Nubble Rock and the Boon Island light.
