South Berwick Homes for Sale
South Berwick is a town in York County and home to Berwick Academy a private co-educational university preparatory day school. The area was called Newichawannock by the Abenaki Indians which means “river with many falls” a reference to Salmon Falls River. It was first settled in 1631 as a part of Kittery.

In 1634 William Chadbourne, James Wall and John Goddard arrived from England to build a sawmill and gristmill at the falls. The factory became known as the Great Mill Workes. During the 19th century various mills were erected at the rivers. Cotton Textile mills produced spindles and looms of sheeting per year. The mills closed in 1893.
Since 1976 South Berwick has hosted a Strawberry Festival in June. It was first established to celebrate the United State Bicentennial and was so popular that it continues today.
